The signs of Guelph's growth have been obvious in recent years.

The data reveal the Yukon's population was narrowly surpassed by Nunavut's for the first time since 1999, when Nunavut was established as a distinct territory. The population growth rate in this region, which stands at 4.2 per cent, is 0.9 per cent higher than the Quebec average.

In Brantford's case, the census found that the population of the City of Brantford itself actually rose from 93,650 in 2011 to 97,496 in 2016, while Brant County's population increased by three per cent.

The Ontario population increased in 2016 on average by 4.6 per cent.

The highest rates of population growth in Canada during the census period are in the west. Ontario's growth rate, despite being much lower than Alberta's by percentage, still included a much larger number of people.

Many First Nations also saw growth rates higher than the provincial average, Membertou First Nation (pop. 1,015) enjoyed a massive 11.3 per cent growth while Eskasoni First Nation, the province's largest reserve (pop. 3,422), saw a 3.4 per cent growth rate.

The population of the country actually grew at a slightly lower rate between 2011-2016 than it had between 2006-2011 - five per cent compared to almost six per cent during the previous census period.

According to Hallman, we know from other sources that while births and deaths are now about equal in the province - though that is expected to change as the population continues to age - Nova Scotia is experiencing population loss to other provinces in Canada.

Some suburbs have reported population declines.

"This could be a change in family composition, it may be a situation where people are leaving the house and we have slightly smaller family sizes resulting in a growth in dwellings", Leesti said.

"Now people are becoming more settled here".

There were 705,244 residents in the city of Winnipeg in May 2016.

But the quickest dwellings growth in the GTA was in Milton, at 26.7 per cent, which also saw the fastest population boost (30 per cent).

Statistics Canada defines a census metropolitan area as one or more municipalities with an urban core of 50,000 and a total population of at least 100,000.

According to Statistics Canada, the slower population growth in Atlantic Canada is mainly because of interprovincial migration, low immigration levels, and high death rates compared to births due to aging populations.

The first census after Confederation was conducted in 1871.

That means there are approximately 1.7 million new Canadians since the 2011 Census, representing a G7 country-leading 5 per cent jump over that time. "There are fewer people coming to settle in Quebec than in the western provinces".

Growth in New Brunswick shrank by 0.5 per cent - the first time since 2006 a province has reported a negative growth rate.

"The data collected during the 2016 Census will paint a detailed picture of our nation and the communities in which we live. the census will also provide the high-quality information needed to plan critical services such as child care, housing and public transportation for all Canadians".
