The college is named for John C. Calhoun, a SC native who served as US vice president under John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson.

Administrators at Yale University announced on Saturday that a college named for John Calhoun, a former USA vice-president who was an ardent supporter of slavery, will be renamed after sustained protest and activism from students.

Yale officials are meeting over the weekend to again consider changing the name of Calhoun College at Yale University.

Calhoun College is named after a supporter of slavery.

Elena Hodges, a Yale College senior, said she came to the protest to show solidarity with her classmates and the Greater New Haven community.

After meeting Friday and Saturday, advisers recommended unanimously that the name of Calhoun College be changed. The issue of Calhoun College had been debated for years.

"It is now clear to me, too, that the name of Calhoun College must change". This has not been taken well by a number of people and Chris Rabb, a 1992 Yale graduate, told the Associated Press on Saturday: "I'm underwhelmed".

The Ivy League university said the move ends the controversy over the former politician and defender of slavery John C Calhoun, whose legacy led to campus protests in 2015.

Yale University has chose to rename its Calhoun College residency, heeding the advice of a three-person panel, two of whose members were professors who had signed a petition to rename the previous spring. The colleges have their own dining halls, libraries and live-in faculty "masters" (recently controversially renamed as "head of colleges") and command fierce alumni loyalty.

A portrait of John C. Calhoun, the 7th vice president of the United States of America, hangs along a wall in the Senate Reception Room, one of the Capitol's most richly decorated public rooms. She left her teaching role at Vassar during World War II to enlist in the U.S. Navy, using math to fight fascist enemies.

After teaching math at Vassar College in NY for almost a decade, she enlisted in the Navy and "used her mathematical knowledge to fight fascism during World War II", the university said. Criminal charges were dropped and Yale rehired Menafee, who had described the image as offensive.

Black students staged demonstrations against the college whose walls were embellished with slaves carrying cotton bales, calling it "Calhoun's Plantation", according to the New York Times. Her work on the earliest computers and computer languages made it possible to write programs for multiple machines simultaneously, to use word-based languages allowing non-specialists to use computers for the first time and dramatically expanding the ways computers could be used. She was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom a year ago.
