The American Road and Transportation Builders Association's list of 55,710 deficient bridges includes high-profile structures such as Throgs Neck in New York, Yankee Doodle in CT and Memorial Bridge in Washington D.C., the report said.

The number of structurally deficient bridges actually declined 0.5% from 2015, but ARTBA says that really isn't good news.

The American Road & Transportation Builders Association published an interactive map showing the states with the highest percentage of structurally deficient bridges.

The list reflects data gathered by the Transportation Department which uses a nine-point scale to score the state of the nation's bridges. After some calculations, it said it discovered cars, trucks, and school buses cross these bridges 185 million times a day. State transportation departments have identified 13,000 Interstate bridges that need replacement, widening or major reconstruction.

The analysis was conducted by Alison Premo Black, the chief economist of ARTBA who expressed her concern over the performance of America's highway system, adding that it is in "desperate need of modernization".

MI ranks 16th in the nation when it comes to the number of structurally deficient bridges.

A new national report released overnight shows hundreds of the state's bridges are falling apart.

While these bridges may not be imminently unsafe, they are in need of attention. The ones with the lowest are Washington D.C., Nevada, Delaware, Hawaii and Utah.

Among Northeast states, only Vermont had a better record in 2016, reducing its inventory of deficient bridges by 18 percent, trailing only California's whopping 30 percent reduction.

Bridges labeled structurally deficient aren't necessarily in immediate danger of collapse.
