Facebook Live captures Chicago shooting that killed toddler

Jon Howard | 16 February, 2017, 01:13

Toddler Lavontay White was riding in a auto with his pregnant 20-year-old aunt Breunna Devonte and her 26-year-old boyfriend, who has not been named, when a gunman cut them off, got out of the auto and opened fire on their vehicle, the Daily Mail reports.

Two people, including a toddler between 2 and 3 years old, were killed, police said. Two-year-old Lavontay White was shot & killed in Chicago on February 14 while riding in a auto with his pregnant aunt. Superintendent Eddie Johnson said paramedics were able to revive Lavontay at the scene, but that he later died at Stroger Hospital.

Police said the little boy who died is the nephew of the pregnant woman who also was shot. Guglielmi said she is pregnant and that both she and her unborn baby are now in fair condition.

The man went into a store on 71st Street and was followed inside by another person, who fired shots at the man, killing him, said Officer Thomas Sweeney, a police spokesman. The woman then runs from the auto into the home of someone she appears to know.

Police say they have a good idea about the identity of the shooter.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel also said that when children are killed "our consciences are shaken and are hearts are broken". Both girls were in critical condition on Monday but police have not updated their condition since.

Levontay was among at least three children shot in Chicago in recent days. James Johnson, 23, died at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner's office.

"My gut is telling me that when we finally find this guy, we're going to find that he's a repeat gun offender".

"This has just got to stop somewhere", a visibly upset Johnson said during Tuesday's news conference, footage of which was posted to the department's Facebook page. Police had not yet released the names of the shooting victims. "We have yet another innocent child in Chicago that could lose their life over senseless gun violence".
