Mulvaney passes next-to-last hurdle for budget post, will learn fate Thursday morning

Jon Howard | 17 February, 2017, 00:44

John McCain on Wednesday announced he will oppose the confirmation of Rep. Mick Mulvaney as director of the White House's Office of Management and Budget. This is not political.

"Congressman Mulvaney has spent his last six years in the House of Representatives pitting the national debt against our military", McCain said.

"As director of the Office of Management and Budget, Rep. Mulvaney will be at the center of discussions on federal spending and regulations".

"The House's loss is President Trump's gain", the North Carolina Republican said in a statement. John McCain, R-Ariz., the lone Republican who voted against his appointment.

In at-times hard-hitting remarks - McCain at one point said a Mulvaney quote could only have come from "a person detached from the reality of what these cuts have made to military service members" - McCain gave Mulvaney's defense record a thrashing.

Democrats opposed Mulvaney over his support for curbing the growth of Medicare and Social Security and other issues, such as his brinksmanship as a freshman lawmaker during the 2011 debt crisis in which the government came uncomfortably close to defaulting on US obligations.

But Cochran's spokesman, Chris Gallegos, said Wednesday afternoon that the 38-year Senate veteran will vote for Mulvaney.

"President Trump has committed to "end the defense sequester" and 'rebuild our military.' Earlier this month, the President promised troops at CENTCOM headquarters that his administration 'will make a historic financial investment in the Armed Forces of the United States.' I fully support the President's commitment".

Immediately after the confirmation of Mulvaney, the Senate will turn to EPA nominee Scott Pruitt, the staunchly conservative Oklahoma attorney general.

Mulvaney's confirmation leaves open his safely Republican 5th District seat.
