Man accused of Facebook-video murder found dead after chase

Jon Howard | 19 April, 2017, 10:50

The US man wanted for killing Godwin in OH and then posting a video of the murder on Facebook fatally shot himself Tuesday after a brief pursuit in neighboring Pennsylvania, police said.

Officers searched dozens of places around Cleveland without finding Stephens or any other victims before expanding the manhunt. Stephens ordered a 20-piece Chicken McNuggets and fries.

A McDonald's employee recognized him and told Stephens the fries were not ready in order to stall for time as another employee called 911.

Beginning with a gunshot, ending in 127-characters; a tweet from the Pennsylvania State Police ended a nightmare 48-hour, nationwide pursuit for Steve Stephens. Authorities say police tried to pull him over and, after a brief chase, he killed himself.

Following a short pursuit of about a mile or so, police executed the pit maneuver - striking a vehicle on one of its fenders to make it spin - on Buffalo Road by an abandoned school and an officer saw Stephens pull out a pistol and shoot himself.

Godwin's sister said she feels, "Angry sometimes", over Robert's death and that she was hoping Stephens would be brought to justice.

"As a result of this awful series of events, we are reviewing our reporting flows to be sure people can report videos and other material that violates our standards as easily and quickly as possible", said Facebook in their statement.

The police chief said Tuesday that it wasn't clear whether Stephens had any help while he was on the run or where he had been and that investigators will try to retrace he steps. State police went to the restaurant and Stephens sped off until the crash, according to police.

Police said the woman he referred to was in a safe place.

Eventually, he said, people would use augmented reality on eyewear, although he did not give any details about possible Facebook hardware. Williams said police were in the process of searching the area more thoroughly when Stephens was sighted. Facebook said it removed the video 23 minutes after learning of it. His mother told authorities that she had spoken with Stephens on Sunday before his phone died and he explained he was shooting people because he was "mad with his girlfriend".

Police had initially said that Stephens had broadcast it on Facebook Live.

Godwin pleads with Stephens before he was shot, "I don't know anybody by that name".

Police later located him by a cellphone ping.

Authorities had been offering up to $50,000 for information leading to the arrest of the 37-year-old Stephens, who was wanted over the apparently random killing of 74-year-old Robert Godwin Sr.
