Coppola was also just the second woman in history to be nammed best director; Russian director Yuliya Solntseva won for "The Story of the Flaming Years" in 1961.

Danish actor Claes Bang plays a museum director and divorced father of two young daughters who gets robbed in broad daylight in the city centre.

She took home the honor for You Were Never Really Here, a crime drama starring Joaquin Phoenix, and a surprise hit that closed out the festival with a seven-minute standing ovation.

"This film is an homage to those who died but also those who survived and are still alive, who had so much courage", said Robin Campillo, the director and a former member of the ACT UP movement featured in the film. Actress Nicole Kidman was awarded a special 70th anniversary award.

In his humorous speech Smith said, "In my mind, [her speech] would have been something like, 'Merci beaucoup madame and monsieurs!'"

After winning, Ostlund said: "I think my first reaction was "oh my God, how fantastic".

He apologized for his appearance, saying the prize was "totally unexpected". Leonor Serrail's Jeune Femme was given the Camera d'Or award, which recognises directors' first feature films.

The award for the Best Screenplay was shared by Scottish director Lynne Ramsay for "You Were Not Really Here" and Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos for "The Killing of a Sacred Deer".

Anyone who's seen Östlund's last major film, Force Majeur, knows the director is incredibly adept at drawing out hilariously awkward social situations to really make a viewer squirm.

Spanish irector Pedro Almodovar presided over a jury that included German director Maren Ade, American actress Jessica Chastain, Chinese actress Fan Bingbing, French multi-hyphenate Agnes Jaoui, South Korean director Park Chan-wook, American megastar Will Smith, Italian director Paolo Sorrentino and French composer Gabriel Yared.

"Cinema takes its inspiration from reality", she said.

Diane Kruger was named best actress and Joaquin Phoenix was named best actor while the coveted Palme d'Or went to the satirical The Square. The film alludes to a series of actual killings that shook Germany six years ago, when it came to light that police had spent more time investigating the possible mob connections of migrant victims than the tell-tale signs of the far-right plot eventually uncovered.

The actress told broadcaster Canal Plus, "We saw lovely films".
