Cyclone Mora makes landfall in Bangladesh

Darrell Mcdonald | 02 June, 2017, 05:44

Cyclone Mora swept through Bangladesh on Wednesday, sweeping away thousands of primitive huts that numerous Rohingya Muslim refugees were living in. Four persons were killed after they were hit by falling trees in Cox's Bazar district and Rangamati town, bdnews24 reported.

All flights were suspended to and from Chittagong worldwide airport and the Cox's Bazar airports in Bangladesh as wind speeds remained above 117 kmph. The local government had evacuated around 3, 00, 000 people from 10 coastal districts.

The port city of Chittagong experienced the maximum gust of wind with 135 kilometers per hour when it hit the district at around 10 am.

The tropical storm flattened thousands of temporary huts in camps for Rohingya refugees who had fled violence in neighboring Myanmar, Rohingya officials told Reuters.

This is published unedited from the IANS feed. "Now we are giving them medical treatment", Eastern Naval Command spokesman Commander C.G. Raju told AFP."We are planning to send a rescue aircraft to look out for more survivors".

"The Rohingya live in small shacks - we describe them as barely standing - so they have been devastated", Uddin said.

He said 20,000 houses in refugee camps were damaged.

Bangladesh's meteorological department had previously warned that low-lying areas of Cox's Bazar, Chittagong and many other coastal districts were "likely to be inundated" by a storm surge of 1.2m-1.5m (4-5 feet) above normal levels. He added that no more deaths were expected as the worst had passed. Nearly all the 10,000 thatched huts in the Balukhali and Kutupalong camps were destroyed, Alam said.

In Myanmar, about 300 houses were damaged in Rakhine State but the extent was unclear, the government said.

The Indian Navy has rescued 27 people in a major operation in Bangladesh which has been hit hard by Cyclone Mora, causing widespread destruction and rendering millions of people homeless.

Cyclone Mora takes place days after heavy rains in Sri Lanka claimed the lives of at least 193 people, many of whom buried under landslides, and caused the most severe flooding in 14 years. Cyclone Sidr in 2007 killed almost 4,000 people.

Past year also, the coastal areas of Bangladesh were badly stricken by the cyclone Roanu when more than 24 people died in the natural calamity.
