Donald Trump and Angela Merkel in war of words

Darrell Mcdonald | 02 June, 2017, 05:42

The two leaders "get along very well", Spicer said.

This is not the first time Chancellor Merkel has vowed to take a tough approach to Britain in the wake of Brexit. After hosting Modi, Merkel is due to meet with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang on Thursday.

Spicer asserted that Trump views not just Germany, but the rest of Europe, as an important American allies.

Kurt Eichenwald has been sounding the alarm for months about Donald Trump's troubling overseas ties - and the reporter and author has seen at least one of his dire predictions come true. They wonder why the leader of Germany's most influential worldwide ally seems more willing to criticize their country than nations with questionable human rights records.

He explained the huge synergy that exists between German capabilities and Indian requirements.

"Those who do not oppose these U.S. policies will become complicit", Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel, who also serves as Merkel's deputy, told Rheinische Post newspaper on Tuesday.

United States President Donald Trump has called Germany's trade and spending policies "very bad", intensifying a row between the longtime allies and immediately earning himself the moniker "destroyer of Western values" from a leading German politician.

Meanwhile, President Trump and the White House continue to complain about the use of anonymous sources in news reports about the ongoing investigation into the Trump administration's ties to Russian Federation. "I wrote a story laying it out, which was lost amid 'but her emails!'" Eichenwald wrote Thursday afternoon on Twitter.

Trump is now mad at Merkel. Merkel knows full well what her voters want to hear, but the existing agreements [whereby Europe plays the second fiddle to the US] haven't gone anywhere.

Spicer went on to say that the quote from Merkel was taken out of context.

Soon after her comments, Trump swiftly blasted Germany over trade imbalance.

"We have a MASSIVE trade deficit with Germany, plus they pay FAR LESS than they should on North Atlantic Treaty Organisation & military", he wrote.

In a tweet early this morning, Mr Trump criticised the Russia probes, writing: "Russian officials must be laughing at the US & how a lame excuse for why the Dems lost the election has taken over the Fake News". "This will change (sic)", he tweeted.

"We have experienced a totally different president to all of his predecessors since World War II, who puts into question the very foundations of transatlantic relations", the foreign affairs committee chairman said. "The fewer allies that we have that we can call upon reflexively, the more hard world politics is", she said.

"Germany is a large, reliable and trustworthy partner for us", he added.
