Gunners set to end speculation and confirm where Arsene Wenger's future lies

Arsene Wenger could leave Arsenal in the lurch by walking this week – Wright Arsenal confirms extension for Arsene Wenger

Numerous media outlets, including BBC Sport, have reported that manager Arsene Wenger has agreed a new two-year contract.

The Frenchman has been at the helm for nearly 21 years and, despite a section of supporters calling for him to depart this summer when his contract expires, he is now expected to further that stay after holding talks with Arsenal's board on Tuesday.

Arsenal are expected to announce whether Arsene Wenger will continue as their manager on Wednesday afternoon.

He has won three Premier League titles and a record seven FA Cup titles - the most recent coming on Saturday with a 2-1 win over Chelsea.

The FA Cup winners are refusing to confirm widespread reports that Wenger, 67, has agreed terms on a new contract at the Emirates Stadium.

Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov, an Arsenal shareholder who recently had a takeover bid rejected, warned that Wenger won't be successful unless he has the complete backing of the board.

Gazidis would still like to bring in a sporting director to coordinate issues ranging from scouting and medicine to youth development and analytics.

He has come under greater pressure from supporters than ever before, with fans holding "Wenger Out" placards, boycotting home games and chartering planes to trail banners calling for him to go. The uncertain futures of stars Alexis Sanchez and Mesu Ozil, whose contracts expire next summer, certainly didn't help quell dissatisfaction with Wenger.

Fifth-placed Arsenal finished 18 points behind Chelsea, with embarrassing defeats at Crystal Palace and West Bromwich Albion ruining their chances of staying in the top four.

This has been a perennial gripe for fans and pundits alike, that Wenger doesn't like to get involved in bidding wars with the Gunners' major rivals and resorts to what appear to be last-minute panic buys and paying over the odds.

"The lack of respect from some has been a disgrace and I will never accept that".

"I am grateful to have the support of the board and Stan (Kroenke) in doing everything we can to win more trophies".

"It's not my person that is hurt but the impeccable image of the club around the world".
