Daniel Summerhays opens 3-shot lead at Memorial Tournament

Lingmerth, Dufner share Memorial lead as Spieth chases, Johnson falters Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant power Golden State Warriors past Cleveland Cavaliers 113-91

By the end of the day, his nearest challenger was Daniel Summerhays, who was third in the US PGA championship a year ago and yesterday shot a 69 to lie five shots off Dufner.

The Offaly golfer shot a four under par 68 in his second round to move up to a share of 13th place after 36 holes.

Lingmerth, the 2015 champion at Muirfield Village, had a mixed round that included eight birdies, an eagle and three bogeys.

Day, who has yet to crack the top 25 at the club where he holds a membership, made bogeys on both par 5s on the back nine and was headed for a big score until he birdied his last two holes for a 75.

Dufner fired home five birdies and he ended his round in style by securing an eagle after holing out form 176 yards. "The Auburn alum missed birdie at 10 from 6'10" and then ate double bogey-7 at 11 after putting his third to the par 5 into the water.

"He called me and said, 'Bro, I played good, it's clicking, '" said Boyd Summerhays, Daniel's older brother by four years and also his coach. "But I'm more focused on my breathing and I'm at with that".

"I managed to still get some decent lies out of the ones that missed the fairway", Lingmerth said.

Daniel Summerhays is Dufner's closest challenger after he hit three birdies in four holes during a round of 69, although the deficit was extended to five following a bogey on the last.

He very quietly took only 130 shots over two days.

World No. 3 Ryu, who needs to finish at least third to have a chance to reach No. 1, opened with a three-over 74.

"A lot of luck with it going in", Dufner said.

Perth native Greg Chalmers shot a 68 to take a one-under total, while Cameron Smith (71) and Rod Pampling (73) finished at one-over.

Jordan Spieth, one shot behind Dufner after the opening round, was among those playing in the afternoon.

Muirfield Village member Jason Day (71) is 2 over after 36 holes, hovering around the cut line.

"I caught some breaks when I missed the fairway and still had some fairly good opportunities from the rough", Lingmerth said.

"I think the one thing that also helps is it gives me something to think about other than my stroke or holing this putt or the situation I'm in", Dufner said.

World No.3 Jason Day has cursed sluggish starts at his hometown event but is desperate to find consistency in his final hit-out before the US Open. It's nice to actually be here on the weekend after missing three straight cuts here.

Rickie Fowler was among them, salvaging a two-under 70 after a poor start with a triple-bogey seven at the second.
