Apple announces an iMac Pro update and iOS 11

Johanna Francis | 07 June, 2017, 16:53

Much of the focus at Apple's 2017 Worldwide Developers Conference running from June 5-9 in San Jose seems to be on the software and mobile device sides.

Graphics will be provided by a Radeon Vega with up to 16GB of VRAM memory that can power multiple 4K displays, or up to 44 million pixels at any given time, if you can find a screen that large. But AAPL could also be an Epic Fail if the new phone gets "meh" reviews when it's release.

Keeping all of this hardware from overheating required a new cooling system, and Apple claims that the new dual-fan, centrifugal fan design in the iMac Pro will keep everything cool and quiet.

Apple's all-in-one iMac has gone Pro with powerful new processors and graphics created to meet the needs of professional users. Other features include a 27-inch 5K display, four Thunderbolt 3 ports and 10GB Ethernet. An all-in-one PC with considerably more oomph than even the new Kaby Lake-powered iMacs, the Pro is built to be fast in every respect. The entire line has been moved to Intel's Kaby Lake series of processors along with options to have up to 32GB of RAM on the 21.5-inch models and up to 64GB RAM on the 27-inch models.

John Ternus, VP of hardware engineering, said the new iMac displays will be 43 percent brighter at 500 nits and be capable of showing one billion colors.

The new iMac's will also get the High Sierra update this fall.

Since the end of a year ago, many have suspected that the MacBook Air's days are numbered, especially after Apple suggested that the thinner and lighter MacBook Pro is its replacement when the Air wasn't refreshed last Autumn.

The iMac Pro is extremeley impressive on paper, but isn't ready for testing just yet.

The new graphics enables extraordinary computing experiences, gaming and immersive virtual reality (VR) on select models.

At the back of the room was a single iMac Pro to look at, but not to touch.

Major update ships with choice of an 8-core Intel Xeon processor, a 10-core version or an 18 GB processor - the most powerful Mac ever. That's why customers still love the MacBook Air.
