WWDC 2017: Apple gives Siri top billing on watchOS 4, Apple Watch

Michele Estrada | 07 June, 2017, 16:39

Apple Watch, tied for No. 1 in IDC's wearable device tracker for the first quarter, is getting more functionality via Watch OS 4.

We expect Apple will also release a bunch of new watch faces with the watchOS 4 update. According to techradar.com the Apple Watch 3, will likely be more widely known as the Apple Watch Series 3 "is a long way off yet", however rumors are swirling that the device will be the biggest name in smartwatches on the market to date.

The Siri face will deliver information to the user depending on what time it is and what events the user has lined up for the day.

WatchOS 4 is in developer preview now. Siri will also provide news headlines from Apple News.

"When we use gym equipment, it has data that the Apple Watch doesn't have and the Watch has data the gym equipment doesn't have so you end up with numbers - like calories and distance - that don't completely match", Lynch said during the opening keynote.

If you've ever tried to track your indoor workouts, you may have noticed some discrepancies between what your fitness tracker tells you and what the treadmill tells you, and it can be hard to tell which one to listen to. With watchOS 4 four you can accurately count down all the calories, you burned during your toughest workouts.

Users will also be able to pick out a playlist to start in sync with their workouts, or alter the playlist from the workout app with a simple swipe.

It's also quicker and easier to start work outs, so it doesn't get in the way as much, and it's easy to switch between different workouts in a single session. Apple recently bought the sleep tracking app Beddit and we expect some of those features to be included on the Apple Watch 3 as well as watchOS 4. In the demonstration shown by Apple this week, the Apple Watch attained information from gym equipment using NFC. New colors of the Nike Sport Band are also available.
