"We are thinking the firefighter at this moment".

Knysna, a town of 77,000 people 500 km east of Cape Town on South Africa's famed Garden Route, was worst hit as firefighters battled to quell 26 fires along the tourist trail.

"If it's viable, we will then start water bombing areas where we know the fire has potential of spreading", said Manuel.

Staff ReporterThe Knysna Fire has ravaged vast distances and caused massive displacement.

The BBC reports from Cape Town that before the storm, there had been several interfaith meetings to pray for rain.

The South African government sent the military to Knysna on Thursday morning to help with humanitarian efforts and prevent looting.

Additional emergency and rescue officials have been deployed to the scene in a bid to contain the fires.

President Jacob Zuma on Thursday delivered a message of support and offered condolences to those affected by the storm and fires in the Western Cape.

Residents of the city's many shanty towns have been worst hit as their fragile homes have been unable to resist the strong winds and heavy rain.

Cape Town has reported five deaths in relation to the storm that hasn't been seen in three decades.

Disaster management officials told reporters that four people were killed in a fire caused by lightning while a 60-year-old man died after an informal structure collapsed on him.

"Our hearts go out to those who have also lost their belongings including their homes. The pain is immeasurable".

"It is mostly the poorest sections of our society that usually bear the brunt of natural calamities, such as severe weather conditions, due to the conditions under which they live", South Africa's parliament said in a statement.
