South Africa: 10000 Knysna residents evacuated amid fire

Knysna, a town of 77,000 people 500 km east of Cape Town on South Africa's famed Garden Route, was worst hit as firefighters battled to quell 26 fires along the tourist trail.

Disaster management officials told reporters that four people were killed in a fire caused by lightning while a 60-year-old man died after an informal structure collapsed on him.
"Our hearts go out to those who have also lost their belongings including their homes. The pain is immeasurable".
"It is mostly the poorest sections of our society that usually bear the brunt of natural calamities, such as severe weather conditions, due to the conditions under which they live", South Africa's parliament said in a statement.
