DC, Maryland to sue Trump alleging breach of constitutional oath

The attorneys general of Washington, D.C. and Maryland say that they will file a lawsuit on Monday alleging that President Donald Trump has violated his constitutional oath of office, reports say.

The lawsuit, obtained by the Post, from Racine and Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh - both Democrats - alleges that Mr. Trump committed "unprecedented constitutional violations". "The emoluments clauses command that. the president put the country first and not his own personal interest first".

In the D.C. area, both the District and Maryland will cite ways they have been adversely affected by the opening of the Trump International Hotel previous year near the White House.

The Post cited examples of foreign government showing preference for that hotel over others, at what neighbouring Maryland and Washington say is their expense.

The suit will ask the court for an injunction blocking Trump from accepting foreign money, the person said.

The duo told the newspaper that if a federal judge gives a go ahead to the case, they would demand copies of Trump's personal tax returns to understand the extent of his foreign business dealings.

An NGO that centres on ethics issues filed a similar suit in January. Trump himself has appeared at the hotel and greeted guests repeatedly since becoming president. But NBC News and MSNBC reported last month that the Trump Organization hasn't been tracking all possible payments it receives from foreign governments.

However, the case from two Democratic attorneys general could stand a better chance in court as the first government action over allegations that Trump, a Republican, violated the constitution's so-called emoluments clause.

"To attempt to individually track and distinctly attribute certain business-related costs as specifically identifiable to a particular customer group is not practical", the pamphlet stated, according to the reports.
