Israel advances plans for additional 1500 settler homes

The Six-Day War was fought on June 5-10, 1967 between the Israeli regime on the one side and Egypt, Jordan, and Syria on the other.

The powerful settler movement wields heavy influence in Mr Netanyahu's right-wing governing coalition.

Counting plans and tenders, Peace Now said 7,721 units had been advanced this year, nearly triple the number for all of 2016, which amounted to 2,699.

"As a proof, this year marks the 50th anniversary of Israel's liberation of Jerusalem and the West Bank", she claimed.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has condemned the plan for the new housing units. At the same time, it is also a sobering reminder that five decades later the elusiveness of Israeli-Palestinian and full Israeli-Arab peace is a painful reality.

Israel continues doing whatever it wishes, with impunity, and peace is just a word that it has long deleted from its dictionary and Palestinians vaguely recognise, for it is not part of their lives.

Almost 400,000 Jewish settlers are estimated to be living in the West Bank along with 2.8 million Palestinians. Any peace agreement with the Palestinians, who seek a capital in Jerusalem as well, should acknowledge reality and provide for a new division of the city - with adjustments, however complicated they might be to negotiate - over the location of a new border.

While the majority of those are for pre-existing homes, some will be built in the first new official settlement in some 25 years, Peace Now said.

The "illegal" settlements are unacceptable, and Israel's action is damaging the grounds for a two-state solution, it added. But he has given no details about how he plans to restart talks, and there is deep scepticism over whether such an effort would have any chance of success.

Last week, the premier told settlers he would keep building across the West Bank.

Abbas's spokesman called Netanyahu's statements a "challenge" to Trump and the worldwide community.
