WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder was arrested and charged with second degree marijuana possession yesterday in his hometown of Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Wilder was picked up in Tuscaloosa by police officers after doing a search as they smelt the drug from the vehicle during a routine traffic stop.

The 31-year-old American, who last fought in February when he beat Gerald Washington with a fifth-round knockout to retain his WBC heavyweight title, was released on bond for $1,000.

Wilder, who has yet to be defeated in thirty eight boxing fights, has been considered by many as the next logical matchup for British born boxer and unified heavyweight champion, Anthony "AJ" Joshua.

Wilder's attorney, Paul Patterson, told The Tuscaloosa News that the marijuana in Wilder's vehicle didn't belong to him, and that someone had used his vehicle while he was out of town.

"Deontay has been out-of-state for several days", he said. The department says officers got permission to search the vehicle after smelling marijuana and found a small amount in the vehicle's console.

Wilder won a bronze medal at the 2008 Olympics.

Wilder has been chasing a fight with Kiwi WBO champion Joseph Parker, with the hope of a unification bout in NY.

Meanwhile Bermane Stiverne remains the mandatory challenger for Wilder's prestigious crown. Wilder, who has finished 37 out of 38 (97%) fights by knockout, may provide the flawless test for Joshua who has finished all of his 19 fights so far.
