Milwaukee Sheriff Clarke rejects Homeland Security position

Controversial Milwaukee Sheriff David Clarke has reportedly'rescinded his acceptance of a Department of Homeland Security position because he believes he can promote the president's agenda in a'more aggressive role Reports: Sheriff Clarke no longer taking job with Homeland Security

When Mr. Clarke said last month on a Milwaukee radio show that he would join the homeland security agency as an assistant secretary, it set off alarms in Wisconsin and in Washington.

"Late Friday, Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke Jr. formally notified Secretary of Homeland Security John F. Kelly that he had rescinded his acceptance of the agency's offer to join DHS as an assistant secretary".

Clarke adviser Craig Peterson said the sheriff believes he is of better use to President Trump "in a more aggressive role".

The sheriff put out a statement posted to WisPolitics on Saturday, saying he is rescinding his acceptance of a position within the Department of Homeland Security.

A DHS spokesman said by email Sunday that Clarke is no longer being considered for a position within DHS.

Clarke is notorious in Milwaukee for the disproportionate size of his media presence as compared to the actual size of his role in the city's sheriff's department.

It's unclear if Sheriff Clarke will continue to lead Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office, where he has served as its top cop since 2002. He would have worked with such policies had he been confirmed for the Homeland Security job.

Clarke has come under fire for comments he has made about the Black Lives Matter movement, which grew out of protests over a number of police killings of unarmed black men in various parts of the United States.

In addition to the plagiarism charges, Clarke has always been the subject of charges that his department has mistreated prisoners and suspects alike during his tenure.
