National Hockey League teams release protected lists for expansion draft

Golden Knights submit expansion draft picks by 10 a.m.to the NHL and NHL Players Association. Now, General Manager George McPhee and his staff will continue to have discussions with the other 30 National Hockey League clubs. Girardi and the Rangers bid an emotional goodbye after 11 seasons, but it was a necessary move as many of these are with Vegas about to poach 30 players for its inaugural season.

Nick Shore, center: Possible trade bait in the days leading up to the expansion draft?

Several general managers, including Arizona's John Chayka on Saturday, noted how the Golden Knights can corner the goalie market and use those assets as trade bait.

So, look for the Kings to protect only the best of the best Sunday, when the lists are revealed. The only deals other teams can make during the freeze are deals involving the Knights.

Saturday's trade deadline for teams looking to shuffle potentially exposed players around came and went with only a few deals being made; something which came as a pleasant surprise to McPhee.

What guidelines must Vegas follow?

The Flames would be thrilled if McPhee assumed the final three years of Brouwer's contract, worth $4.5 per season, and likely would be willing to sweeten the pot in an effort to part ways with him. Not to suggest the Penguins would go insane and over-spend on a free agent, but less Fleury the Penguins would have about $20 million in space under the now expected ~$75 million 2017-18 salary cap.

Clubs now have to weigh contracts and value when strategically deciding which players to expose. Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury made headlines this week, waiving his no-movement clause so that he can be made available.

Player contracts might dictate which of the two options a team chooses.

Prospects: All players with less than three years of professional experience are automatically exempt.

The Golden Knights said Saturday night they were very pleased with the expansion draft process so far and have "indicated that they will give all 30 clubs every opportunity to keep their rosters intact if they'd like".

And what about the other teams? The Knights will have their pick of more highly sought goalies than either of the two Finns from the Stars.

That left the required two forwards (Joakim Nordstrom and Lee Stempniak) and one defenseman (Klas Dahlbeck) with the required experience mandated by the league, along with goaltenders Cam Ward and Eddie Lack. The objective behind this is to allow the Golden Knights to get a sense of whether or not they will be able to sign a free agent before going ahead and using a pick on them in the Expansion Draft.

The NHL announced Sunday morning which players have been protected by their teams for the upcoming expansion draft. Youngsters Connor McDavid and Darnell Nurse don't meet the minimum pro experience criteria, so they're automatically protected and don't need to be exposed.
