One officer killed as Taliban storm Afghan police compound

Darrell Mcdonald | 19 June, 2017, 00:45

A week earlier, a Taliban infiltrator killed three USA troops in eastern Afghanistan.

"We understand that the soldiers were getting back into their vehicle when a soldier from the Afghan national army picked up what is said to be a rocket-propelled grenade and fired it at the group of soldiers, and that is how these injuries have happened". It said one Afghan soldier was killed and one wounded.

Afghanistan's Ministry of Defense also is investigating, said Abdul Qhahar Aram, head of strategic communication and public affairs for the 209 Shahin Corps.

A spokesman for Resolute Support in Afghanistan said in a statement that all seven soldiers were medically evacuated and "are being cared for".

The violence comes just seven days after an Afghan soldier turned his weapon on his USA counterparts in another region of Afghanistan, killing three soldiers and wounding another.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, with spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid reporting more than 100 police were killed and wounded.

The Taliban did not directly claim the attack but described the soldier, who was killed, as a "patriot".

It comes as the United States is expected to send more troops into the lengthy conflict at a time when the Taliban are ramping up their campaign against the Western-backed government.

The suicide bomb and gun attack on the headquarters in Gardez city was launched about 6am, regional police commander Asadullah Shirzad said.

In April, Taliban gunmen and suicide bombers attacked the same sprawling Afghan army training base, leaving scores of Afghan soldiers dead and scores more wounded.

US President Donald Trump is learned to have delegated authority on the number of troops in Afghanistan to Defense Secretary Jim Mattis.

"The incident is now under investigation", the statement read.

Special forces soldiers in the Afghan army, generally referred to as commandos, are much more highly trained than regular troops and work in proximity to USA soldiers, including serving as partners in ground combat operations, as well as in training exercises. He added that two other insurgents were killed by police, but a fight with one remaining attacker is ongoing. The soldiers were assisting operations against the Islamic State in the restive eastern province of Afghanistan.

In the deadliest attack in Achin in eastern Nangarhar province, three USA soldiers were killed when an Afghan soldier emptied his automatic rifle in their direction. There has been no causality reported by the US Troops.
