The Louisiana Republican is recovering from "substantial damage" he suffered when a bullet pierced his left hip and traveled directly across to the other hip, Dr. Jack Sava of MedStar Washington Hospital Center said Friday.

A Federal Bureau of Investigation lab team looks for evidence in the outfield signage at the ball field which is the scene of a multiple shooting in Alexandria, Va., Wednesday, June 14, 2017, after a rifle-wielding attacker opened fire on Republican lawmakers at a congressional baseball practice, wounding House GOP Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana and several others as congressmen and aides dove for cover.

During the friendly competition, a D.C. -area hospital released the following statement about the condition of Rep. Steve Scalise, who was shot Wednesday while practicing for the game with his colleagues.

Republicans and Democrats have swapped political insults for friendly rivalry at their annual congressional baseball game in honour of House of Representatives politician Steve Scalise, critically injured in a shooting rampage. The crowd chanted "USA!"

Capitol Police Special Agent David Bailey, who was wounded when he and another officer engaged in a shootout with the gunman, hobbled onto the field on crutches to throw out the first pitch.

Sava also said that Crystal Griner, one of the U.S. Capitol Police officers credited with saving Scalise and others at the field, sustained a gunshot wound to her ankle. Two lawmakers who were leaving practice when they encountered Hodgkinson before the shooting believe he was targeting Republicans.

The US Congress and law enforcement authorities are looking at ways to improve security for lawmakers and their aides following Wednesday's shooting of Representative Steve Scalise and three others, with money being both the possible remedy and hurdle.

"A lot of times in politics we have divisions but it shouldn't come to violence", he said.

More than $1 million has been raised for Congressional Sports for Charity, and more than 20,000 tickets have been sold for the game, the organizers wrote on Facebook Thursday afternoon.

President Donald Trump sent a video message to the game, highlighting Scalise who remains in critical condition on Thursday after several surgeries.

Played nearly every year since 1909, this year's congressional contest began with a moving tribute to the victims of the shooting, as well as the Capitol Police officers who helped take out the gunman.

The attack happened around 7 a.m. Wednesday morning at the Eugene Simpson Stadium Park where lawmakers were practicing for a congressional charity baseball game.

The charities are the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Washington, Washington Literacy Center, the Washington Nationals Dream Foundation and, after Wednesday's shooting, the Capitol Police Memorial Fund.

"For all the noise and all the fury, we are one family", Ryan told the House on Thursday. The two have enjoyed a long-running ribbing over the game, which Republicans won last year to break a seven-year Democratic win streak. He said he hoped the game would help heal emotional wounds.

"He clearly knows they're there and appreciates their presence", Sava said.
