Chance for heavy tropical flooding rain this week

Hurricane forecasters keeping an eye on Gulf this weekend Tropical storm could form by next week

Tropical Storm Arlene formed back in April, almost two months before the formal start of hurricane season on June 1.

A tropical storm warning is in effect for St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad, Tobago, and Grenada. Conditions appear to be favorable for gradual development of this system while it moves slowly northwestward toward the southern Gulf of Mexico early next week. It has maximum sustained winds of 40 miles an hour, meaning it is just barely above the threshold to be a tropical storm. The current forecast calls for sunny, hot conditions to continue unabated through the rest of the week.

Potential Tropical Cyclone Two has winds of 40 miles per hour - which is tropical storm force. Clouds will hang around but eventually move out by Tuesday morning leaving us with mostly sunny skies.

Heavy rain is expected along the Gulf Coast this week.

Severe Weather Team 2 is watching these systems as they develop and will have updates throughout the day on Channel 2 Action News. This storm is forecast to stay a tropical storm before fizzling out.

While the Gulf storm remains disorganized, forecasters say it will likely become better formed over the next two days and warned residents in the Florida Panhandle and Texas coast to be prepared for possible advisories.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center on Sunday increased the chance of tropical storm in the Gulf of Mexico for next week.

It will also begin to get breezy starting Tuesday, and the approaching storm will also raise the risk of rip currents along the beaches, the weather service said. Stocking up on extra batteries, water, and a flashlight is a smart move as well for the entire hurricane season!

Two areas of potential development are being watched by the National Hurricane Center. This is expected to be able to overcome the system, and dissipate it by the end of the work week.

The western Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico are two of the areas we typically look for the development of tropical storms in June.
